NDD – can directly disturb cognition, processinginfo processing

  • Specific reflex effect – must correct reflex to normalize
  • Residual cognitive & processing functions treated later

NDD – can indirectly disturb cognition, processing

  • Results from CNS stress, overload from compensation
  • Cognitive & processing functions improve and/or normalize as CNS overload, stress factors are reduced

Frequently disturbed cognitive & processing areas

  • Short Term Memory –disturbance can simulate ADD
  • Long Term Memory –dependent on Short Term integrity
  • Visual Processing – integration of visual information
  • Auditory Processing – comprehension of auditory input
  • Sequential Memory – sequential ordering, concepts
  • Spatial – concepts, ordering, comprehension
  • Attention, focus – select & attend to input, reject unwanted
  • Comprehension – clear perception of content & meaning
  • Processing Speed – reflects learning, expressive efficiency
  • Executive Function – a set of cognitive skills required for the planning, initiation, and regulation of complex goal-directed behavior.

Disturbed in varying degrees by all aspects of NDD:

  • Primitive Reflexes – retained, residual
  • Postural Reflexes – absent, incomplete
  • Vestibular malfunctions
  • CNS overload, compensatory processes
